Understanding Seed Phrases

Learn what recovery seed phrases are, why they're critical, and how to protect them.

⚠️ Critical Security Information

NEVER share your seed phrase with anyone. NEVER enter it on any website. NEVER store it digitally. Anyone with your seed can steal all your crypto.

What Is a Seed Phrase?

A seed phrase (also called recovery phrase, mnemonic phrase, or backup phrase) is a list of 12, 18, or 24 words that serves as the master key to all your cryptocurrency in a wallet.

Example (DO NOT USE)

abandon ability able about above absent absorb abstract absurd abuse access accident

This is just an example from the BIP39 word list. Never use a seed phrase you found online.

How Seed Phrases Work

Your seed phrase is mathematically converted into all the private keys for your wallet:

  1. The wallet generates a random seed phrase during setup
  2. This seed creates a "master key" through cryptographic functions
  3. From the master key, unlimited private/public key pairs can be derived
  4. Each cryptocurrency address comes from these derived keys

Why This Matters

Anyone with your seed phrase can recreate all your private keys and steal everything. This is why seed phrase security is the most important aspect of crypto security.

Seed Phrase Standards

BIP39

Most wallets use the BIP39 standard, which defines:

  • A list of 2048 specific English words
  • How to generate random phrases (12, 18, or 24 words)
  • How to convert words to the master seed
  • Optional passphrase (25th word) for additional security

Compatibility

BIP39 seeds are generally compatible across different wallets. A seed created on Ledger can usually be restored on Trezor and vice versa (though always verify before relying on this).

How to Store Your Seed Phrase

✅ Do

  • Write it on paper provided by the manufacturer
  • Use a metal backup (fire/water resistant)
  • Store in a secure location (safe, safety deposit box)
  • Consider splitting across multiple locations
  • Tell a trusted family member where to find it

❌ Never

  • Store digitally (computer, phone, cloud)
  • Take photos or screenshots
  • Email it to yourself
  • Store in a password manager
  • Enter on any website
  • Share with anyone online

Metal Seed Backup Options

For long-term storage, many users engrave their seed on metal plates that resist:

  • Fire (paper burns)
  • Water damage
  • Fading over time

Products like Cryptosteel, Billfodl, and others are available from various manufacturers.

Passphrase (25th Word)

Some wallets support an optional passphrase that acts as a "25th word":

Benefits

  • Creates a completely different set of addresses
  • Even if seed is stolen, funds are safe without passphrase
  • Can create "hidden" wallets

Risks

  • If you forget the passphrase, funds are lost forever
  • Must be backed up separately from seed
  • Typos create different (empty) wallets

Recovery Process

If your hardware wallet is lost, stolen, or broken:

  1. Purchase a new hardware wallet (from official source)
  2. During setup, choose "Restore from recovery phrase"
  3. Enter your 24 words in the correct order
  4. Your wallet and all funds are restored

⚠️ Security Warning

Only enter your seed phrase on the hardware wallet device itself. Never type it into a computer, phone, or website. Phishing sites trick users into entering seeds to steal their crypto.

⚠️ Important Reminder

Your seed phrase is the only way to recover your crypto if you lose access. Protect it like it's worth your entire crypto portfolio - because it is. We are NOT affiliated with any wallet manufacturer.
